When It Rains It Pours!

What a week it has been! Tommy has been giving us quite a scare over the last few weeks. He has been making a gasping sound when he breathes. We had seen quite a few doctors, but none of them had been able to figure out what was wrong. After turning blue on us a few times, his pediatric Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor decided it was time to have a closer look. On Monday, Tommy was admitted to Mass General for surgery. We arrived at the hospital at six o'clock in the morning. Mommy and Tommy both changed into scrubs and prepared for the big day.

Then Mommy and Tommy went down to the surgery floor where Mommy was allowed to sit with Tommy until he went under anestisia. This was really hard on Mommy. It is not easy to see your baby put under! Then Mommy went back up stairs and waited with Daddy until they called her back down to the recovery room. Tommy was quite happy sleeping and didn't want to wake up. He takes after his Mommy and Daddy...he loves to sleep.

We spent the rest of the day loving and comforting our little boy while he recovered. Daddy got kicked to the curb by the nurses, so Mommy stayed with Tommy until he was released on Tuesday afternoon.

During the surgery, the doctors used cameras to look at Tommy's airway, lungs, and stomach. They determined that he has laryngomalacia and trachealmalacia. This means that different spots in his airway are weak and collapse when he inhales. Fortunately he has mild cases of both and should grow out of them as he matures. They took some biopsies while they were in there. We should get the results next week. We want to thank everyone for all the phone calls, thoughts, and prayers.

Our other sad new is that Tommy's daycare provider, Thaya, called today to tell us that she will be returning to teaching in December. We are heartbroken, as we have come to trust her and know that Tommy loves spending time with her. We pray that we will find someone that we love as much to replace her. When it rains it pours!
